When should you book a wedding photographer?

Nine to twelve months ahead is normal, and rather more for Saturdays between May and September. That is not manufactured scarcity: a photographer has exactly one Saturday per weekend.

Which dates go first

  • Saturdays from May to September — half of all weddings fall in that window.
  • Long weekends and public holidays, because travelling guests find them easier.
  • Dates that look good on paper, which many people pick at the same time.
  • Fridays and Sundays stay open far longer — and are often cheaper at the venue too.

The order that works

Date and venue first, then the photographer. The other way round produces agreements nobody can keep: a photographer who knows your venue plans around it, one without a venue plans around a guess. Even so, no more than a week should pass between confirming the venue and asking the photographer.

When it is short notice

Ask anyway. Cancellations happen, and a date that frees up four weeks out rarely finds anyone. Put the date, the place and the rough timing in your first message — that can be answered in a minute instead of three emails.
