Getting ready: what the room has to do
The morning pictures come from a window and an empty surface next to it, not from equipment. Both can be arranged in advance, and once they are, that part of the day is settled.
One large window, nothing else
Daylight from the side is the kindest light there is. A room with a big window beats any hotel suite without one. Sit for hair and make-up so the light comes from the front and side rather than from behind — that is the only technical advice this part needs.
What should be cleared away
- Suitcases, hangers, packaging, water bottles — anything that will otherwise stand in frame.
- Ceiling lights off: mixing window light with bulbs makes skin tones restless.
- Dress, shoes, rings and pocket square in one place instead of being hunted for.
- Book a room for getting ready, not the one with the most guests in it.
How much time
Sixty to ninety minutes if both sides are covered. The best moment for the photographer to arrive is when hair and make-up are nearly finished — the beginning is rarely interesting, the end always is.
