What if it rains on your wedding day?
Rain does not ruin wedding pictures — poor preparation does. The strongest images from many weddings come from days when the weather did not cooperate.
Why rain is often better photographically
Clouds are a diffuser stretched over the whole landscape: no hard shadows, no squinting, even light on every face. Midday sun is the exact opposite and the hardest condition of the day. Wet asphalt and wet leaves reflect as well, and reflections carry pictures.
What changes in the timeline
- Couple portraits move closer to a roof: an archway, a treeline, an arcade, a barn.
- They get shorter — twenty good minutes beat forty soaked ones.
- The group photo needs a covered spot decided in advance, not one hunted for in the rain.
- Two large plain umbrellas belong in the car. Clear ones are the least distracting in pictures.
What to arrange beforehand
Ask your venue in advance which room is used for the ceremony if it rains and where group photos are possible. That question costs one phone call and saves half an hour on the day. And tell your photographer early that you would still go outside in the rain — most couples do in the end, but only if someone suggests it.
